One of East Anglia's most renowned vineyards set up near Boxted in the heart of Constable country. Approach along A134 Colchester-Sudbury road and turn up Boxted Church Road. Then take second right turning. When developed, the vineyard was not connected to the mains but is powered by wind and by generator. The soak-away away of the reed-bed filtration unit is planted with comfrey - a ideal fertilizer for organic grapes.
The original vineyard label commemorated the famous King Cole who ruled in nearby Colchester
'Old King Cole was a merry old soul
and a merry old soul was he
He called for his pipe and he called for his bowl
and he called for his fiddler's three'
The bowl was a bowl of wine and the fiddlers were his 3 sons who were always plotting against him. !
Dedham Vale uses the New Zealand Scott Henry vine trellising - a combinbation of GDC and Guyot - to maximise the light and heat reaching the grapes.

Tourist trail

Dedham Vale is the green vineyard with Suffolk Punches used at harvest and 40 acres to ramble through. They have won an Environmental Awareness Award for their work. Great shop and cafe.
