Pebblebed produces grapes at 3 vineyards in Devon at Ebford, West Hill above the Otter valley and at Bovey Tracey. The vines were planted by the families who make up the organically-based organisation. The name stems from the Ebford vineyard, within sight of the River Exe, where the vines thrive on the thin soil, underlain by pebbles. 6000 Pinot Noir vines make up the bulk of the recent plantings. The other vines are coming into maturity, with the first wine, a gold medal winning rose, being released in 2005. The 3 acre Ebford vineyard was planted in 2002 and has since been expanded. In 2005 it became fully recognised as an organic vineyard by the soil association. West Hill was planted in 2005-6. Recently, Geoff Bowen has taken over the management of the Dartmoor Vineyard near Bovey Tracey. All are run as a community project, with 11 families involved. The vineyards are all operated using environmental best practice, from sustainable farming to energy saving and waste reduction.
