Mersea is the lowest sited vineyard - probably in the world. It lies on the south coast of Mersea
Island on a slight North-South slope with clay soils. First planted in 1885, it has always
produced consistenty high class wines. Currently these are available from local shops and hotels, but a
new winery and vineyard shop has been built construction .
Mersea Island is approximately 7 miles south of Colchester and is situated between the estuaries of the
rivers Colne and Blackwater. Access is by means of a tidal causeway. To gain access, cross the causeway (B1025)
and turn left towards East Mersea village. Rawsalls Lane is the third turning on the right and the
vineyard is at the end of the lane.
