Boze Down nestles in the lee of the Chilterns, with a view of the Thames winding away across the meadows to the south. The initial crop was eaten by badgers - hence the label. These are now (hopefully) discouraged by the high wire Geneva Double Curtain wiring - pioneered in this country by Bernard Theobald at the now defunct Westbury vineyard just across the river.
Boze Down (pronounced as in hose - not as in shoes!) was one of the earliest users of the English Quality wine scheme. The red was a light smoky wine, suitable for cheese dishes and spiced tomato dishes - and noted as one of the best of its type in Britain. The vineyard now rarely produces wine. The last vintage, the Millennium red won the T&CVA Trophy for the best wine in show, and was described as akin to a good Beaujolais. Boze Down is approached from the M4 via the A340 road . Turn right at the mine-roundabout in Pangbourne and then almost immediately left across the Toll Bridge. Fight you way through Whitchurch's narrow streets and, just as the hill starts to steeped, turn right into Hardwick Road The vineyard is on the right as you leave the village.Mind the badgers!
