  • Planted in 2005, Pant Du lies in the former quarrying valley of the Nantlle Vale, just south of Caernarfon. The vineyard should be in production by 2009, and will join the ranks of the most westerly vineyards in the UK, clustered around Ynys Mon and the Menai Straits. It is anticipated that a visitor centre will also be opened at the farm
The Nantlle Vale was best known for slate mining, and industry that dated back to Roman times and which, at its zenith, produced over 450,000 tons a year. The Cilgwyn quarry on the slopes of Mynydd y Cilgwyn dates from the 12th century, and is thought to be the oldest in Wales, producing the distinctive local green slate. The last quarry to close, Penyrorsedd quarry closed in 1997 but is currently being developed as a heritage site, sponsered by Bangor University.
